Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) – Most of the essential commodities prices have increased in the capital Dhaka ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr to be celebrated either Sunday or Monday depending on moon sighting, customers said.
Per kg of broiler chicken was selling at BDT 180 Friday which was BDT 150 on the first day of Ramadan that started on July 21, 2012.
Retailers at different markets including Fakirapool, Shantinagar and Malibagh said that they had purchased per kg of broiler at BDT 170 from the wholesalers.
They said that they had to calculate carrying cost of broiler chicken from wholesale market to their respective shops and daily maintenance cost of their business establishment before selling.
Since the beginning of Ramadan, the price of broiler chicken and local fowl have started to rise, with traders cited the reason for short supply against the demand.
On the other hand, the prices of carrots, tomato, cucumber, lemon and read meat were also selling at high prices by the traders.
However, the prices of soybean, vermicelli and sugar were stable following sufficient supply in the market.
At different kitchen markets including Shantinagar, Fakirapool, Jatrabaria, Khilgaon and Malibagh found cucumber was sold at BDT 30- 35 per kg on Friday which was BDT 20-25 over the past few weeks. 
Carrot was selling at BDT 50- 55 per kg which was BDT 40-45 during the past several weeks. A hali (four of each) of different sizes of lemon was sold at BDT 25- 30 on Friday which was BDT 20-25 during the past few weeks.
Loose polao rice (basmati aromatic) is now selling at BDT 115-120 per kg which was BDT 110-115 over the last few weeks. A kg of polao rice of different brands was sold at BDT 120-125 on Friday which was selling at BDT 120 over the past few months.
Per kg of cinnamon was sold at BDT 300-350 on the day which was at BDT 280-300 during the last week. Per kg of cardamom was sold at BDT 2000 on Friday which was between BDT 1850-1900 during the previous week. Per kg of cumin was sold at BDT 450- 500 on the day which was at BDT 380- 400 earlier.
Beef was sold at BDT 300 per kg on Friday instead of BDT 280 as fixed by the concerned authority before the start of Ramadan. Mutton was sold at BDT 425- 450 on the day which was same over the past few months.
