Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) – The prices of different brands of pasteurized liquid milk have increased by BDT 2.0- 4.0 per litre at the retail level in the capital Dhaka on Thursday ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr festival.
Different brands of milk such as Milk Vita and Arong brands shot up though there was no report of supply shortages, customers claimed.
Per litre of Milk Vita brand was sold at BDT 60- BDT 62 while half litre at BDT 32- BDT 34 on Thursday. One litre of Arong milk was sold at BDT 60 on the day which was sold at BDT 58 over the last few weeks.
Normally the retail price of per litre of Milk Vita is BDT 58 while half litre is BDT 32.
The retailers blamed inadequate supplies of milk by the companies’ distributors that had forced the price to go up.
They said that they were not getting sufficient supply of milk since 26th Ramadan and they had to pay extra money to the suppliers even to get a portion of their normal selling quantities (packets) of milk.
“The demand for the essential item normally goes up during the ongoing month of Ramadan and for the Eid- ul- Fitr,” an official of the marketing department of Milk Vita said.
He also said that the management of Milk Vita is trying to minimize the gap between demand and supplies as soon as possible.
