Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)– President Zillur Rahman has appointed Professor Anwar Hossain as the vice-chancellor of Jahangirnagar University (JU) from a three-member panel, elected by the JU Senate members on July 20 last.
The President also appointed the immediate past VC of the university, Professor Shariff Enamul Kabir, as a member of the Public Service Commission (PSC), Secretary of the President’s office M Shafiul Alam reportedly said.
Prof Anwar was made VC of the university after Prof Shariff Enamul Kabir, who was forced to resign on May 17 following protests by students and teachers.
During the panel poll in JU, Prof Shariff bagged the highest 50 votes. Incumbent VC Prof Anwar got 38 votes while Prof Nurul Alam 37 votes.
Dr Mohammad Anwar Hossain, a Biochemistry and Microbiology Professor of the Dhaka University (DU), is the President of DU Teachers’ Association and younger brother of freedom fighter Col Md Abu Taher, Bir Uttam.
