Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) – The tanners have raised prices of raw hides and skin by 50 percent ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha after the domestic leather sector was hit by anthrax scare over the past several months.

During the three-day Eid-ul-Azha tanners get around 50 per cent raw hides of total annual collection.

The tanners at a meeting on Sunday fixed raw hide prices at BDT 60 per square foot for the city and BDT 50 for outside the city. It was BDT 40 and BDT 30 per square foot in 2009.

The tanners said the value of raw hides of goat has been fixed at BDT 30 per square foot in the capital Dhaka and BDT 25 for outside the capital.

The prices fixed by the association are applicable only to procure raw hides at field level across the country, Chairman of Bangladesh Tanners Association Shaheen Ahmed.

Around 170 tanners of the country exported semi-finished and finished leather worth US$226 million in fiscal 2009-10 while shoe manufacturers shipped footwear worth $ 204.09 million.
