Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)– The United Nations fully committed to support Bangladesh in consolidating democracy and the Millennium Development Goals, U.N. Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh Renata Dessallien said in Dhaka on Saturday.

“Let me take this opportunity to reaffirm the UN’s dedication and full commitment to support Bangladesh in consolidating democracy and the Millennium Development Goals,” she said the 35 years of UN in Bangladesh, adding: “We stand ready and will do our utmost to respond to the needs of the government and the people of Bangladesh.”

The commemoration of the 35 years of U.N. and Bangladesh partnership and the 64th Anniversary of the UN, organized on the day underscored the outstanding contributions of Bangladesh to the United Nations and the relevance of the UN in the advancement of a better world for all, a U.N. press statement said.

On Sept 17, 1974, the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution admitting Bangladesh into the U.N. and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman addressed the U.N. General Assembly as the first Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

In his speech Sheikh Mujibur Rahman said: “The noble ideals enshrined in the UN Charter are the very ideals for which millions of our people have made the supreme sacrifice. The Bengali nation fully commits itself to the building of a world order, in which the aspiration of all men for peace and justice will be realized.”

Since then, Bangladesh has remained committed to the commitment and has worked tirelessly with the United Nations to enhance peace, development, democracy, and respect for human rights in all corners of the world.

“Let us re-commit ourselves to the building of a world order, in which the aspiration of all men and women for peace and justice will be realized. We owe this to the millions of people that have already sacrificed for this. We owe this to ourselves. We owe this to our children”, said Renata Dessallien.
