New Delhi, India (BBN)– At least 35 people were killed and 30 others wounded when a bus and a pickup truck collided head on in northern India on Saturday, police said.

The accident took place near the town of Badaun in Uttar Pradesh state, around 200 kilometers southeast of New Delhi Saturday evening.

The driver of the bus was killed in the incident, a police official confirmed.

India has one of the highest rates for traffic fatalities in the world with accidents caused by speeding, careless driving, poor roads, overcrowding and poor vehicle maintenance. Approximately 120,000 people are killed in road crashes each year, according to official data.
