Meghalaya, India (BBN)-The wife of Bangladeshi politician Salahuddin Ahmed on Friday moved a bail application before the first class judicial magistrate here for his release.
The court, while keeping the bail in abeyance, asked for records from the investigating officer and fixed May 29 as the next date of hearing of the case, reports the Shillong Times.
The Bangladeshi political leader is yet to be produced before the court pending the final opinion of doctors who are treating him at NEIGRIHMS.
The condition of Ahmed, who is suffering from kidney and heart ailments, is said to be stable.
The Bangla politician was shifted to NEIGRIHMS on Wednesday evening after being referred by doctors at the Civil Hospital here.
Earlier, a government lawyer said that in the bail petition, Ahmed’s wife stated that he had gone missing on March 10 after Bangladesh enforcement officials in plain clothes whisked him away.
According to the petition, the police in Bangladesh turned down the plea of Ahmed’s wife to file an FIR regarding his abduction. This forced the wife to move the High Court in Bangladesh on the issue.
The Court directed the police to report the status of the investigation to the Bangladesh Home Ministry every month.
“Though the petitioner pleaded for Ahmed’s bail, the fact that the police could not investigate into the matter as the man in question is still undergoing treatment made it impossible for the Bangladesh politician to get bail,” said the government lawyer.
During the hearing in the court, the petitioner pleaded that Ahmed was sick and needed to be taken to foreign countries for better medical treatment.
Several documents such as passports and visas of the countries which he visited for medical treatment were also submitted before the court.
Ahmed was arrested on May 11 for trespassing into Indian territory without valid documents.
