Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- Sammilito Knit Parishad has won the biennial election of Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), the national platform for knitters.
Parishad, a panel led by incumbent President AKM Salim Osman, won 22 posts of directors, while former president Fazlul Hoque's Progressive Knit Alliance bagged five posts.
Mohammad Ayub, chairman of the election board, announced the final results of the election at Narayanganj Club Community Centre at Narayanganj in the presence of candidates and other people on Saturday.
The election was held in Dhaka and Narayanganj.
The elected directors will choose the president and four vice-presidents of BKMEA today for 2012-14.
Twenty-seven candidates under the Parishad banner contested for as many posts of directors while 25 candidates contested from Progressive Knit Alliance panel.
A total of 217 voters out of 249 cast their votes in Dhaka while 381 voters out of 403 in Narayanganj, Mr. Ayub said.
Current second vice president Mohammed Hatem bagged the highest votes of 504.
The election to the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) was peacefully held on Saturday with around 91.5 percent of turnout.
The election was originally scheduled for July 7, but the election board of the association postponed it on July 5 following a Commerce Ministry instruction.
