Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) – Sammilita Parishad has swept the biennial election to the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), the apparel sector’s trade body, bagging 21 director’s posts out of 27.
The panel leaders led by Atiqul Islam, managing director of Islam Garments Ltd, bagged 15 posts from Dhaka while six from Chittagong.
The rest six posts went for Forum, another panel of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA). Mahmud Hasan Khan, managing director of Rising Group, headed Forum.
The polls held on Sunday registered an 88 percent turnout, the largest in the trade body’s history.
A total of 2,812 out of 3,196 votes were cast at the voting centres in Dhaka and Chittagong, according to data from the election board.
In the election, the voters picked a total of 27 directors — 20 from Dhaka and 7 from Chittagong —for the 2013-14 term.
Under the existing provisions, the elected directors will now select a president and four vice-presidents, with the first vice-president coming from the Chittagong region.
Sammilito Parishad candidates, elected from Dhaka, are panel leader Atiqul Islam with 1700 votes, M Sajjadur Rahman Mridha 1440 votes, SM Mannan Kochi 1462 votes, Mahbubur Rahman 1454 votes, Abul Kalam 1494 votes, Shahidullah Azim 1485 votes, KM Rafiqul Islam 1438 votes, Nasir Uddin 1410 votes, Mohammed Nasir 1410 votes, Moshiul Azam 1405 votes, Syed Sadek Ahmed 1393 votes, Azmat Rahman 1378 votes, Reaz Bin Mahmud 1405 votes, Abdullah Hil Rakib 1341 votes and Arshad Jamal with 1376 votes. 
Parishad leaders elected from Chittagong Zone are Nasir Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury with 1489 votes, M Abdul Wahab 1464 votes, Sheikh Sadi 1421 votes, Anjan  Shekhor Das 1367 votes, Sabbir Mostafa 1377 votes and Sayed Nazrul Islam with 1425 votes. 
The Forum panel included its leader Mahmud Hasan Khan Babu, who got 1377 votes, Abdulah Al Mahmud 1355 votes, Ferdous Parvez Bivon 1364 votes, MA Rahim Feroz 1376 votes and Vidiya Amrit Khan 1344 votes. The only winner from Chittagong under Forum is M Mohiuddin Chowdhury getting 1360 votes.
