Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) – Sir Fazle Hasan Abed was elected as the chairman of BRAC Bank on March 7.
He founded the bank in 2001 to develop inclusive banking services for small and medium entrepreneurs, including those in rural Bangladesh.
He was the chairman of the bank from July 2001 to April 2008, the bank said in a statement.
Former deputy governor of Bangladesh Bank Muhammad A (Rumee) Ali chaired the board at BRAC Bank from May 2008 to February 2013.
Mr. Ali will continue to serve as a member of the Board of Directors of the bank, according to the statement.
Sir Abed is the founder and chairperson of BRAC, which was established in 1972 to help the poor in the rural areas of Bangladesh.
Since then BRAC has increased its presence in economic and social development, health, education, human rights and legal services, disaster management and climate change adaptation and other sectors.
Today, BRAC is the leading development organisation in the world in terms of the scale and diversity of its interventions and operates in Bangladesh and 10 other countries across Asia, Africa and the Caribbean.
BRAC Bank is one of country’s fastest growing banks with 155 branches, more than 300 ATMs, 397 SME unit offices and over 8,000 human resources.
