Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) – The chairman and the managing director of Smart Export Garments Ltd were arrested at Dhanmondi in the capital Dhaka, police said Wednesday.
The arrestees are: Zakir Ahmed, the chairmen of the garment factory, and Sharif Ahmed, the MD of the unlicensed garment factory.
A team of Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested the duo at a house around 11:00pm on Tuesday, a police official confirmed.
Seven women workers were killed in the garment factory on Saturday as a devastating fire raged through the factory.
The deaths were caused by suffocation from smoke and stampede when the frightened workers scrambled to come out of the two-storied building of Smart Export Garment Limited after the fire broke out, according to police and witnesses.
Like the fire at Tazreen Fashions in Ashulia on November 24 last year, workers at Smart Garment alleged that all exits at the factory were closed. Both the collapsible gates were locked and there were no guards.
