Speaker leaves for Uganda to attend IPU meeting

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- Speaker Mohammad Abdul Hamid Advocate left here for Kampala, Uganda, Thursday night to attend the 126th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) meeting.
 
The meeting will begin on March 31this year, an official statement said.
 
The speaker is leading a 14-member parliamentary delegation.
 
Representatives of 159 member-countries and different international agencies of the United Nations are expected to attend the conference, officials said, adding that the theme of the conference is 'Parliament and People: Bridging the Gap.'
 
The meeting will discuss various issues with emphasis on promoting and practicing good governance as a means of advancing peace and security, redistribution of power, not just wealth and access to health as a basic right.
 
It will also discuss the role of parliament members in establishing democracy, good governance, human rights, women empowerment, sustainable development and ensuring health services for all.
 
Parliament members Saber Hossain Chowdhury, Md Mujibul Haq, ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury, Md Abdu Hye, Md Abdul Majid Khan, Md Motiur Rahman, Golam Mostafa, Najma Akther, Fazilutunnesa, parliament secretariat  Secretary Md Mahfuzur Rahman, additional secretary Sampad Barua and  director (public relations) Md Joynal Abedin are the members of the delegation.
 
The speaker is likely to return home on April 10.
