Last updated: December 3, 2011

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) - Two female workers were killed and more than 50 others injured in a stampede sparked by a fire rumour at a readymade garment (RMG) factory at Chankharpool area in the old parts of the capital Dhaka on Saturday.

Police and witnesses said the panic was created around 1:15pm (local time) when the workers saw heavy black smokes on the second floor of Euro-Tex Limited where they also smelt gas after the leakage of a gas-pipeline linked to the boiler of the factory.

The Euro-Tex was located from second to sixth floors at a multistoried building in the Chankharpool area.

The injured were admitted to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, but more than 20 of them were released after first aid, a doctor said, adding that the rest were undergoing treatment as they suffered severe wounds at different parts of their bodies.
