Stock markets advance, DSE gains 1.8 percent

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) - US stocks advanced on upbeat US company earnings and housing sales signaling economic recovery.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) rose above 9,000 mark during the week. DJIA closed the week at 9,070.72, marking a gain of 2.13 percent over the last week. The NASDAQ Composite added 2.15 percent to 1,967.76 during the same period, according to reports.

Asian stocks also advanced throughout the week on optimistic profit expectations from Asian companies and Japanese lending firms. The Nikkei 225 closed Thursday at 10,116.49, a gain of 3.98 percent over last week. The BSE Sensex added 330 points or 2.23 percent to 15,173.46 over last week.

Locally, turnover at the country's premier bourse, Dhaka Stock Exchange, hovered around BDT 6.5 billion on Thursday. The DSE General Index gained 1.8 percent over the week to close at 2,918.75 on Thursday.
