Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) - Bangladesh’s stocks saw a major setback on Thursday, with key index of the premier bourse dipping below the 5,400-mark, as worried investors went on selling spree.
Brokers said the nervous selling across the board due to fears of further fall of stock prices, dragged the market down.
The market started with a downward note which continued till end of the session without no reversal throughout the session, ultimately ended nearly 109 points lower.
The key index of the DSE slumped 108.75 points, while the Selective Category Index of port city lost 212.72 points.
DHAKA STOCK EXCHANGE
DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), finished at 5,365.14, slumping by 108.75 points or 1.98 per cent after advancing 5.55 points in the previous day.
The two other indices also saw sharp fall.
The DS30, comprising blue chips, fell 36.75 points or 1.84 per cent to close at 1956.89 points.
The DSE Shariah Index (DSES) lost 17.97 points or 1.41 per cent to finish at 1,254.79 points.
Trading activities continued to decline and the total turnover came down to BDT 7.46 billion, which was 15.4 per cent lower than the previous day’s BDT 8.82 billion.
It was also one and a half month lowest turnover since December 21, 2016, when turnover was BDT 7.45 billion.
The losers took a strong lead over the gainers as 327 issues traded, 273 closed lower, 44 closed higher and 10 remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.
LankaBangla Finance dominated the DSE turnover chart with about 7.08 million shares of nearlyBDT 317 million changing hands, followed by Beximco BDT 272 million, Islami Bank BDT 238 million, IFAD Autos BDT 233 million and Ratanpur Steel Re-rolling Mills BDT 225 million.
Rahim Textile was the day’s highest gainer, posting 5.80 percent rise, while ICB AMCL Second Mutual Fund was the worst loser, plunging by 9.53 per cent.
CHITTAGONG STOCK EXCHANGE
The port city bourse, the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), also saw sharp fall with its Selective Categories Index - CSCX –losing 212.72 points to settle at 10063.65 points.
Losers beat gainers as 204 issues closed lower, 32 closed higher and 6 remained unchanged on the CSE.
The port city bourse traded 16.06 million shares and mutual fund units’ worth BDT 453 million in turnover.
