Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) - Export-import activities at Benapole land port has come to a halt due to an indefinite strike enforced by Awami League (AL) and its associate bodies since Friday morning.
Town and Sharsha upazila units of AL, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Jubo League enforced the strike protesting the ‘abduction’ of Benapole pourasava panel mayor Tariqul Alom Tuhin, the Daily Star, a local newspaper, reported.
Tuhin’s brother Shaheen Alom claimed that Tuhin was abducted from Manik Mia Avenue in the capital on his way to Benapole on Thursday.
No truck or lorry left or entered the port since Friday morning, halting export and import activities between Bangladesh and India through the port.
Abdul Awal, director of Benapole land port, said 300 to 400 good-laden trucks enter the country while 250 others set for India through the port daily.
Faijur Rahman, joint commissioner of Benapole Customs House, said they had incurred loss worth Tk 327 crore due to countrywide hartal and strikes at the port last month.
Tuhin, son of Yusuf Alom, is former BCL president of Sharsha upazila unit. A case was filed with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in the capital in connection with the abduction.
