Target Australia names Bangladesh suppliers following Rana Plaza disaster

Last updated: August 14, 2014

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)-Target Australia has listed its Bangladeshi supplier factories as part of a movement towards greater supply chain transparency following last year’s Rana Plaza disaster.
Fairfax reports that Target is among the signatories of the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh, reports ferret.com.
There are eight other Australian signatories, including Cotton on Group, Pacific Brands and Woolworths Australia.
Fairfax reports Target Australia’s managing director Stuart Machine as saying, “We have a responsibility to ensure that everyone who works for our business, whether directly or indirectly, is safe in their workplace.
“This is also a key concern for our customers, who want to know that the products they purchase from Target are sourced and produced ethically."
The Rana Plaza factory collapse near Dhaka in April last year claimed over 1,100 lives and was one of the worst industrial accidents in history.
Oxfam has urged other companies to follow the lead of Target and be open about where their textiles are sourced from.
