Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- Three private commercial banks — Citibank N.A., Jamuna Bank and Trust Bank — are among the top corporate taxpayers receiving tax cards on Sunday with the foreign oil company Chevron Bangladesh (Block 12) topping the list.
They were among the top ten corporate taxpayers both in the fiscal years (FY) 2010-11 and 2011-12.
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) will honour them on Sunday on the occasion of Income Tax Day-2013.
The other selected corporate taxpayers are: Sylhet Gas Field Limited, Karnaphuly Gas Field Limited, American Life Insurance, AK Khan Co Limited, Central Depositary Limited, Bangladesh House Building Finance Corporation and Barapukuria Coal Mining Limited.
Apart from the top corporate taxpayers, the NBR has also selected top ten individual taxpayers for each of the two fiscal years, who will receive the tax cards today.
They are: Salauddin Kashem Khan of Chittagong, AK Samsuddin Khan, AM Ziauddin Khan, MA Haider Hossain of Dhaka, Md Yusuf, Dr MM Amjad Khan, Mrs Khawza Tajmahal, Haji Kaus Mia, M Shahidul Islam, Motajjerul Islam and Sadar Uddin Khan.
Tax officials said as per the related rules the taxpayers who have defaulted on loans or taxes or have criminal cases or any other legal disputes unresolved are disqualified for the tax cards.
However, the taxpayers said the criteria for tax cards could be made flexible for those corporate taxpayers to encourage them.
Last year also, the NBR honoured top taxpayers with tax cards and almost a similar group of corporate taxpayers then received the cards.
The individual taxpayers will receive the tax cards from Finance Minister AMA Muhith at a function on the day, while Managing Directors (MD) or Chief Executive Officers (CEO) of the corporate taxpayers will do it on behalf of their respective companies.
The tax card holders will socially be honoured and get priorities in different state programmes. They will also get priorities in availing themselves of public transport and medical services.
The NBR will arrange week-long tax fairs scheduled for September 16 to 22 both in Dhaka and other divisional cities on the occasion of income tax day.
Similar tax fairs will be held at the district level also. However, the local NBR offices will set the dates for those tax fairs. The top and long-term taxpayers at the district level will also be honoured.
