Rangpur, Bangladesh (BBN)– Four policemen were killed when an intercity train hit a police pickup van in the country’s northern Nilphamari district on Friday night, police said.

The accident occurred when the Dhaka bound Neelsagar Intercity Train from Chilahati in Nilphamari hit the pickup van of Syedpur Thana police at Dhelapeer rail crossing point under Syedpur upazila around 11:15 pm.

The ill-fated pick van with a special police squad of Syedpur Thana, led by its Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ismail Hossain, was on its way to conduct a raid in Porahat area of Botlagari union under Syedpur upazila to catch a gang of dacoits.

Constable Shamsul Islam of Syedpur Thana was killed on the spot and 10 policemen, including the OC, were injured in the accident.

Later, police with the help of the local people immediately sent the injured policemen to Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH) when Constable Maidul Haque succumbed to his injuries on way to the hospital.

Out of nine admitted policemen at RMCH, Constable Shariful Islam and Constable Mohammad Faruk Hossain breathed their last early this morning.

The injured policemen are now undergoing treatments at RMCH where condition of two constables was still stated to be very critical.

Condition of injured OC Ismail Hossain was improving and he is out of danger, according to report.
