Strike brings Ctg port to a standstill
The Chattogram port's overall operations came to a standstill in the last one and a half days because of the countrywide transport strike, stoking fears it could cause fresh container congestion at the country's premier port. Around 1,200 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of export-bound containers are normally transported to the port everyday from the 16 private inland container depots (ICDs) located in the city and in its outskirts.
Strike hits traffic, trade: Public woes mount
The 48-hour transport workers' strike crippled trade and communications for the second day on Monday, taking a heavy toll on all kinds of economic activities. Overall commodity supply chain has been severely disrupted, export-import activities have been halted, and transportation of goods to and from all seaports and landports have stopped due to the strike. Prices of major essential items have shot up due to total supply stoppage.
Transport strike hits economic activities hard: FBCCI
Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry on Monday expressed its deep concern over the 48-hour countrywide work abstention enforced by Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation. The apex trade body said that the work abstention severely hampered normal public and economic activities across the country.
Community Bank gets BB’s final approval
The central bank board of directors gave final approval to proposed Community Bank Limited on Monday after scrutinising all documents properly. The Bangladesh Bank (BB) board also asked the officials concerned to place again three other proposals to setting up new private commercial banks with required documents for further consideration.
Transport strike leads to price hike in Dhaka’s kitchen markets
The 48-hour transport strike being observed since Saturday has raised the prices of vegetablesin the kitchen markets of Dhaka, making both traders and customers anxious. All kitchen markets in the city, including those in Jatrabari, Karwan Bazar, Haatirpool, Sukrabad, and Mohammadpur, are charging significantly higher prices for vegetables.
Experts for dev of negotiation skills to get RMG fair prices
Experts and exporters on Monday stressed enhancing negotiation skills in international trade to get fair prices for readymade garment products. They said that Bangladeshi exporters were not getting fair and reasonable prices for their products due to lack of negotiation skills along with other shortcomings.
No FTAs before LDC graduation
The government is approaching the preparations to negate the erosion of trade privileges following graduation to a developing country at a leisurely pace, with no free trade agreement yet to be signed with any of the important trading partners. Bangladesh will graduate from the least-developed country bracket in 2024 as it has already met all three criteria of the United Nations.
The white elephant called central tax zone of NBR
The government has spent a staggering Tk 320 million for more than a decade and a half for the central tax survey zone that is running without conducting survey. The zone, which virtually turned into a white elephant at the taxpayers' expense, was set up in 1992 to carry out the routine survey of new taxpayers.
