Kathmandu, Nepal (BBN) – The United Nations human rights agency on Tuesday expressed concern that the findings of an independent panel probing four days of deadly rioting in Nepal last year following the murder of a local leader have still not been made public.

The killing of Mohit Khan on September 15, 2007 ignited widespread unrest in and around the south-central district of Kapilvastu, killing 14 people, causing extensive destruction and looting of property as well as the displacement of several thousand people.

Although the judicial commission set up by the government to examine the violence submitted a report in January, the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) said they are worried that its conclusions and recommendations have not been published.

The OHCHR and NHRC also carried out separate investigations into the violence and made their reports public and urged “the government to provide the victims with redress and to ensure law and order to restore peace and calm in the area,” according to a joint press statement.
