Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)-A Supreme Court lawyer filed a writ petition with the High Court on Thursday seeking ban on operation of three Indian television channels in Bangladesh.

The channels are: Star Plus, Star Jalsa and Zee Bangla.

In the petition, SC lawyer Ekhlas Uddin Bhuiyan sought thHC directive on the government to take measures to stop operation of the three Indian television channels.

The petitioner also sought a HC rule upon the government to explain why it should not be directed to stop operations of all Indian television channels in Bangladesh.

In the petition, he said programmes broadcast by the three channels left adverse impact on social and cultural life of Bangladeshi people.

Education of the students and regular functions of housewives are being hampered as they keep watching the programmes of the channels, the petition added.

On August 3, Bhuiyan served a legal notice on the government, asking it to stop operation of Indian TV channels in Bangladesh within 24 hours.

The writ was filed and legal notice served as two cases of suicide took place in Bangladesh being influenced by the drama serial “Bojhena Se Bojhena”.

Being influenced by drama serial, a school student in Gaibandha reportedly committed suicide as she did not get “Pakhi” dress, used in the serial, as her Eid dress, the lawyer said in the notice.

A man from Bogra had reportedly killed himself as he could not provide “Pakhi” dress to his wife, the lawyer added.

Moreover, Bangladeshi television channels are not allowed to broadcast in India, the legal notice added.
