BB Heist: Bangladesh to share only CID findings with Philippines
Bangladesh will share the findings of Bangladesh Bank (BB) heist investigation carried out by Criminal Investigation Department (CID) with Philippines, but the country will not share the probe report of former central bank Governor Farashuddin Ahmed. “We will share CID’s findings to help speed up recovery of the stolen funds of $81 million, but won’t share the findings of Farashuddin’s heist report with Philippines,” Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq yesterday told the Dhaka Tribune over phone.
Remittances from major destinations on dive
Inward remittances from 13 major countries out of 18 marked a sharp fall so far in the current fiscal year against the corresponding previous period. Officials said the inflow of remittances from six Middle-Eastern countries along with two others dropped more than 15 per cent during the July-November period of the fiscal year (FY) 2016-17.
Telcos' investment falls, revenue up
Mobile operators' investment declined 6.18 percent last fiscal year, while their revenues increased 4.3 percent, according to statistics from the telecom regulator. The six mobile operators altogether earned Tk 22,959 crore and invested Tk 5,317 crore. Of the six operators, only Grameenphone and Citycell bumped up their investments in fiscal 2015-16, according to the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission's annual report.
66 exporters selected for National Export Trophy
The government will award National Export Trophy to 66 export companies for the financial year 2013-14 for their outstanding performance in the country’s export earnings. Through a gazette notification, the commerce ministry published the name of award winning companies on December 1. According to the gazette notification, Zaber and Zubair Fabrics Limited won the gold trophy for the third consecutive year as the best exporter company in the FY 14.
DSE turnover crosses BDT 8b-mark again
Bangladesh’s stocks edged higher on Monday after previous day’s mild correction as investors injected fresh fund on stocks amid optimism. Brokers said the market returned to gaining streak as enthusiastic investors went on buying spree after a single-session break. The market started with a positive note and the upbeat trend persistent till the end of the session with no sign of reversal amid increased participation from the investors.
Three mega foreign-aided schemes up for approval
Three mega projects worth Tk 1.43 trillion or US$18.38 billion, including Jamuna Railway Bridge and Rooppur nuclear power plant-Bangladesh's largest one-are up for government approval. Officials said Monday the three behemoths will also bring in the highest amount of foreign assistance worth US$ 14.44 billion from overseas development partners.
Bangladesh, Malaysian firms join hands to build solar power
A Malaysian company will build a 30-megawatt solar power plant in Chittagong in partnership with a Bangladeshi firm in an effort to boost contribution of alternative energy to Bangladesh’s total power generation. A memorandum of understanding was signed between the two companies - Solar MNERGY Resources and Sanzi Textiles Mills Limited, a concern of Well Group of Industries - at Royal Chulan Hotel in Kuala Lumpur on the sidelines of the first-ever Bangladesh Trade and Investment Summit 2016.
IBBL wins The Banker Award for 2016
Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited (IBBL) has been selected by The Banker, a magazine owned by The Financial Times, as the recipient of Bank of the Year in Bangladesh 2016 Award. The United Kingdom (UK)-based prestigious financial magazine has already announced the award in recognition of the IBBL role in promoting the country’s overall economic activities.
