Poultry sector eyes double digit growth

Bangladesh’s poultry industry is expected to grow by an average of 16 percent a year for the next five years, banking on higher investment and increased consumption of protein, poultry entrepreneurs said. Total investment in the poultry sector is likely to double to Tk 50,000 crore by 2020, which will take the sector’s total employment, including direct and indirect, to one crore from 70 lakh at present, they added.

Real estate sector suffers Tk 1,656cr in losses due to unrest, claims REHAB

Country’s real estate sector suffered losses of Tk 1,656 crore in the last 46 days due to a nonstop blockade and frequent hartals enforced by the BNP-led alliance since January 6, claimed sector leaders. The sector leaders at a press conference on Thursday demanded loan rescheduling facility for two years and waiver of interest on bank loans during the political unrest. The Real Estate and Housing Association of Bangladesh organised the press conference at the Sundarban Hotel in the capital.

Textile and apparel sector wants spl credit support
Stakeholders of the country’s textile and apparel sector have asked for providing special credit support and enhancing the existing cash incentive to help exporters recoup their losses caused due to the prevailing political stalemate. Their other demands included suspension of interest on ‘forced loan’ during the period and transfer of all other credits into a blocked account for two years without any interest.

CSE looking for strategic investors
The port city bourse of Bangladesh – Chittagong Stock Exchange is looking for prospective strategic investor who can be the bourse’s partner in the post-demutualisation era. “Discussions with several local and foreign institutions are going on and the bourse will take strategic partner very soon,” said Wali-ul-Maroof Matin, managing director of the port city bourse at a press briefing. Incorporating strategic investor is mandatory in line with the demutualisation of the bourse. The CSE was demutualised last year.

Mamata in Dhaka
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee arrived in the capital Dhaka on Thursday evening on a three-day trip, which both the neighbours view as a visit to strengthen relations between the two countries. State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam and Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Pankaj Saran received Mamata at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on her arrival by an Air India flight.

Bangladesh’s stocks slip into red amid choppy trading
Bangladesh’s stocks slipped in the red again on Thursday after remaining flat in the previous day as most of the investors remained followed cautious stance amid ongoing political turmoil in the country. DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), went down by 14.04 points or 0.29 percent to close at 4,788.23 points. The two other indices also closed in the red.
Stop violence, resolve crisis
Urging an immediate end to the growing violence in Bangladesh, the visiting European Parliament (EP) delegation yesterday echoed the calls from the international community and Bangladesh civil society for solving the political crisis. The three-member delegation of the Sub-committee on Human Rights of the EP made the call in a statement, warping up its five-day visit during which the team spoke with government and opposition representatives and multiple interlocutors.

Govt moves to create sovereign wealth fund

The government plans to create a sovereign wealth fund to invest its excess reserve in attractive financial assets including the US Treasury bonds, a senior official at the finance ministry said on Thursday. The finance division of the ministry of finance on Wednesday formed a 10-member committee, headed by Bangladesh Bank deputy governor SK Sur Chowdhury, to carry out the plan. All the members of the committee are senior officials from the finance ministry and the BB.
